Go Jules Go Gets Down to Business…Cards

Chipmunks! I need your help!

I’m attending my first blogging conference on August 4th (BlogHer ’12), and naturally need to wow my fellow bloggers future fans with my business cards.

Or at least impressΒ Thoughtsy and Misty, who I’ll be meeting for the first time.

I’ve designed several options on VistaPrint, and I’m leaving the rest in your capable paws.

Thanks in advance for your vote (poll below), and if you don’t like any, just…lie to me.

WINNER announced 6AM EST on Friday the 13th (oooh), July 2012.

Have you ever been to a blogging or writing conference? How was it? Any funny/scary/interesting conference stories (blog-related or otherwise)?

  1. This was a tough one. I mean, you really can’t go wrong with that spectacular photo of you. So I picked the card with the biggest one, the first option. I also want to tell you how jealous I am you’re going and meeting Thoughtsy and Misty. I look forward to your post and pictures about it! Oh, and it’s only 6 am right now. Not that this information has anything to do with anything but i just thought I’d throw that out there in case my previous comments don’t make sense.

    1. Ditto everything Maineiac said! (Except about the “previous comments” because I’m way behind on reading your blog so I’ll add my own nonsensical comments as I slowly work on catch up reading.)

      1. Transitioning Momma! Good to see you! Please don’t ever feel obligated to ‘catch up’ here – just join the fun whenever you’d like and I’ll make sure to save you some Cosmos. πŸ˜‰

    2. OH Darla, I wish you could come, too! And thank you! I was so surprised to see such unanimous voting, although I guess that really makes my life easy, LOL

  2. Much like my long lost sister in Maine, I also thought the first was best. It’s got a “I-knew-I-needed-business-cards-so-I went-with-this” look to it rather than a “I-labored-over-this-choice-for-days” appearance.

          1. Excellent…and remember, in the event of a difficult question or an especially awkward moment, take off your glasses/mustache, put one leg of the eye glass in your mouth, look up and to the left (or to the right, if you’re left handed) and feign a look of deep thought.

              1. Believe it or not, if you’re left handed, you would typically look up and to the right when trying to think of an elusive fact. So it’s critical that you look in the right direction when PRETENDING to do so.

  3. I voted for option one, yet I really wanted to vote for option two. The rainbows remind me of a shirt I had once. You’re going to rock that blogging conference! Vodka shots all around.

  4. Torn between one and two. I like the artistic design of two and the fact that it’s black (and not white like most cards) will stand out among the crowd; not that you don’t do that naturally oh, witty, beautiful one.

  5. I like 1. Does that make me boring? About the conference, I hope you come back with an honest assessment – is it a gathering of cool, hip representatives of the future media? You know, what they make it seem like. Or is it a body hair above Star Trek convention?

    1. You could never be boring, FWH! And definitely not one body hair close to it. HA! I will be sure to bring back an honest assessment, if by honest assessment you mean a trademark glossing-over-of-anything-that-might-be-uncomfortable-unless-I-can-make-a-funny-enough-joke-about-it. πŸ™‚

  6. Oh man, I kinda feel like odd man out here. I voted for #3. I thought it looked really “professional”, I liked the two colors of the line with your picture. I thought that made you seem more spontaneous. I also liked the size of the picture, it seemed more in scope with the rest of the card rather than screaming “look at me”. The black areas on the other cards were ok but I thought it kinda brought the emotion down several notches. I dunno, #3 just made me feel good. It was light, fresh and “spunky”! It seemed more like you! You did a great job. I can see why you need help choosing!

    1. Peppermeister (Hub #1) liked that one best, too! It does have a certain spunkiness, doesn’t it?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to mull over this epic-only-to-me decision. LOL Can you believe I’ve made it this far in life without Polldaddy? πŸ˜‰

  7. I voted for the rainbow, hopefully with a pot of gold for you at the end. I like all of them though. πŸ™‚

I’ve never been to a blogging conference, still not sure, but I have met other bloggers before (from my old blog site). And I tried to convince one blogger to move to NY, but he started complaining about the taxes. Blah, blah, blah… Clearly he should ignore that and move here anyway!

    1. Did someone say pot of gold? Will #2 make me rich? OMG. #2! #2!!

Ooh. Convincing bloggers to move here; I can see myself doing that! It sounds like there could be a good story behind this person you speak of… rainbow-color me intrigued.

  8. A blogging conference?! Darla, Hoaiphai, and myself had some ideas a while back that we thought we could do if we ever attended such a conference. They involved writing comments on people’s t-shirts, handing out like stickers, and punching trolls in the face.

      1. According to Google it is only a short 25,000 km journey which would take 5,000 hours on foot or a paltry 1,300 hours via bicycle. Make sure the good biscuits are not all gone by the time I get there πŸ™‚

    1. Ha ha! (Even if you’re joking I’m going to take your comment seriously because…) I used to be really confused when bloggers used the term trolls. Now I understand they’re talking about the meanie-stinky-heads that ‘troll’ the internet leaving hateful/inflammatory comments. I’ve had a blissfully troll-free experience so far…KNOCK WOOD!

    1. Hiya Steve! Good to see you! πŸ™‚ Thanks so much for the vote – #1 is winning by a landslide!

I am VERY serious about chipmunks. I had to grow a mustache just so people would start taking that love more seriously.

    1. (gasp) Peg?? Pegolicious? Is that really you? I was beginning to doubt Katy’s story that you were still alive last time she saw you. I thought maybe the Wendy’s meeting didn’t end well for you.

      1. My family was concerned that Katy was really an axe-murderer. As a result of that meeting, and a heavy-duty meat grinder, Wendy’s now offers a new burger: The Pegolicious Deluxe.

        1. Ha! I want the Peggles Special! Good to see you back my friend! πŸ™‚

We must, must, MUST try to plan some sort of Awesome Bloggers of the Universe Summit within the next year or two.

    1. Make sure you bring the key lime vodka! Mmmmm.

Ooooh, we should try to replicate those key lime martinis for Jules. THAT would be a good time! πŸ˜‰

  9. Well, based on the comments so far (and MY vote, of course!) #1 seems to be running away with it. I like the size of the picture and that it is basic but still memorable. Although, I will say that #2 gave me 80’s rainbow flashbacks, so if that was what you were going for . . . nailed it. But I still like one.

One question though . . . you are really putting your phone number on there? Don’t you think website, twitter and email is enough for someone to get in touch with you? This is coming from someone very private, so I am just wondering. Not a critique or anything.

I just ordered mine. I didn’t put it out there for vote, but I probably should have. I went with basic and free (vistaprint), which meant I had to forego putting a picture on there or playing with colors. I am already spending so much on the conference, I just can’t spend lots more on extras. Besides, NYC is expensive! And I want to have some money left over for fun activities with my good buddies, Thoughtsy and Go Jules Go!! πŸ˜‰

I am so excited and can’t wait to finally meet you and see you in those leggings!! (I need some new material for the whacked anyway!). πŸ™‚

    1. Misty! Hiya! Got a key lime martini ready for me yet? πŸ˜‰ I debated the cell phone number, but then I realized my whole life is out there for the taking, LOL, so why start trying to hide it now? I did get an odd amount of new followers after this post, though…

Thank you so much for the feedback – this has been awesome! I can’t wait to see yours; I’m sure they’re just right. I keep laughing about the fact that I’m making such a to do over this, but I think I just really like futzing around with designs. Look at me and PowerPoint! LOL

My leggings and I CANNOT. WAIT!!!!

    1. Aw golly, Renee, thanks! When I took that picture at the mall a few months ago, I had NO idea I’d use it for anything like this. I bet JK Rowling felt JUST like this when she was writing ideas for Harry Potter on a paper napkin.

  10. I think #2 is the best! Colors make me happy and it has the most. πŸ™‚ No matter which one you pick I”m sure all will be awesome and right in your world!

  11. Meeting fellow bloggers always goes much smoother than expected. I found them all to be overwhelmingly amazing.

    1. That’s been the resounding feedback I’ve seen on other blogs, Mrs. P, and I’m so glad to hear you’ve had the same experience! It’s just such a supportive and talented bunch, isn’t it?! πŸ™‚

  12. Jules, I voted for the first one too. Looks clean and inviting. I didn’t even know about this conference and I checked it out after reading your blog and the one I wanted to attend is sold out. Maybe next year….

    1. Aw, Brigitte, I’m sorry to hear it sounds like we missed an opportunity to meet up! But I suspect this will be far from my last conference πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for voting! Look at #1 go!

    1. LOL! MJ, when are you coming to the east coast (with In -n- Out burgers in tow)?! I wish I could afford to fly everyone here for The Most Amazing Blogging Summit of All-Time.

      1. You must come out this way with First Husband. I’ll treat you to In-N-Out, for sure!!

You must provide all the skinny once you get back from the conference.

  13. It was hard to choose! They were all great!
I haven’t been to a conference, but thanks for the reminder of Blogher! I used to cross post over there and forgot all about it! πŸ™‚
Have fun in New York and don’t forget to dance bomb while you are there!

    1. Thanks so much, Susie! That’s really cool that you used to cross-post with BlogHer. I haven’t done anything like that (yet?)!

I’m going to drop it like it’s so very hot. And then everyone will beg me to pick it back up again.

  14. Okay, I really am the odd one here, I voted for option 4. I think the blue is very complimentary to your skin tone and the black goes with the stache glasses. The two together frame your picture nicely. Weirdly, I liked the “~” between writer, blogger, chipmunk enthusiast. It just adds a little something. Overall I think it is a sleek and simple design. It grabs your attention but doesn’t have too much going on to be distracting. It was a hard decision though, because they are all great. Can’t go wrong with that picture! Have fun, can’t wait to hear about the conference.

    1. Ooh #4! I’m glad you went with your gut! This is really, REALLY helpful feedback – thank you so much!

I can’t wait for the conference, and to let everyone know how it went πŸ™‚

  15. I went with #1 before I saw everyone else also went with #1. My husband teaches graphic design so therefore my opinion has some weight even though I have no graphic design ability. It’s classic and simple. I really want a pair of those mustache glasses.

Good luck at the conference. I went to a writer’s conference before and it was awesome although I didn’t network because I don’t know what to say after “Hi. How are you?”

    1. Oh Speaker you’re such a follower. GAWD.

In all seriousness – thank you so much! This is really making me feel pretty good about my business card-age. I think I just might fill the back with potential answers to questions so I don’t have to network. Or maybe write questions on my hand?

  16. #3 (yes, I voted) but switch the tag lines. “writer, blogger, chipmunk etc” should go under you name and the blog address under the blog name.

I used to attend the Writer’s Conference at TCNJ, which is sadly no more. There is nothing better for making contacts. I wish there was another one around these parts…

      1. Nope. Nothing better than face to face. I don’t know if you’ve heard of, or read, Riding The Bus with My Sister by Rachel Simon. I hooked up with Rachel at a writer’s conference years ago and she’s been my writing mentor while pounding out my novel. You never know who you’ll meet or how it will impact your path.

        1. Get out! I haven’t read it, but certainly have heard of it. That’s so great! I’ve discovered through blogging just how tight-knit and supportive the writing world is, and it’s so wonderful to hear of even more proof.

So about this novel. When do I get to read it?!

          1. working on self publishing it as we speak…er…write. I’m sure you will be aware as I will become a marketing ho in short order…

  17. Since I’m not superstious (2 black cats in family), I’m choosing two: it’s black, it’s Friday the 13th, it has an awesome rainbow stripe….it’s a
tri-fecta of per-fecta. The best conferences are the one’s my hubby attends: he works, I shop…but your’s sounds like fun!

    1. That rainbow one definitely holds a special place in my chipmunk heart. Thanks so much for voting! πŸ™‚

Hmm. I think your husband needs to go to more conferences, don’t you?

  18. I went to a blogger conference once and it was a nightmare. Everyone was in full-fledged furry costumes. They used me as their fire hydrant and I was covered in the urine of sexual deviants. Then they made me play hide and seek, so I hid for four hours straight. They weren’t even seeking. They were just messing with me and said it was part of the new blogger hazing. Beware. Chipmunks may look cute, but if it’s a large, lumberjack of a man wearing a chipmunk costume it’s just not the same. 9 months later I gave birth to kittens (a sexy feline seduced me). Kidding. It will be great.

    1. Col! This comment got sent to my spam folder (boo WordPress)! To think I almost missed this warning and was about to attend BlogHer without my urine-be-gone perfume.

      1. I can’t believe they spammed me! Thankfully you’ll be well-prepared for the conference. Urine-Be-Gone Perfume works like a charm. WordPress is likely censoring me because they’re upset that I defied biology and birthed a litter of kittens.

        1. They spammed ya again, Col! I heard sometimes this can happen if bloggers use more than 10 categories/tags (combined) on their posts? Apparently WordPress equates that with spammers.

However, your explanation is far more logical, and I think you will need to assume a new identity and never speak of the kittens again in order to rectify this.

  19. Definitely option 1! I like the picture and the two-sided approach, picture on the left vs. info on the right. Could you have used the same font as in your blog header for the type? Just wondering.
Enjoy the conference! This lamb’s still too young to be attending any conference(s). And I will be in Germany with my daughter. That’s another type of slaughter altogether…

    1. Karin, great minds! I was actually looking at the VistaPrint fonts that might match my header, but none of them seemed right. I do really like the font in #2 and #3 (“hooligan”), and was going to put that on #1, but was so convinced no one would like #1 and my huge mug that I didn’t bother, LOL Shows what I know! Good thing I put this to the vote!

Ooh, Germany! How wonderful. I hope you have a wonderful trip – I’d love to get there soon!

  20. Jules, my experience having ordered the “black” cards from Vistaprint for my novel was that it looks great as a screen shot but not so good when they arrive – the black is a little faded and the words hard to read. I voted for three…oh and I hope you don’t mind, but I also began using your cell phone number for all those “win a free trip” contests around town…please let me know if I win any LOL!

    1. Hiya Raymond! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate this feedback! I was really stuck on black, but this makes it a lot easier to part with that idea.

P.S. – Sue from Sham-Wow.com would like to tell you that you’re only one purchase away from the chance to win a lifetime supply.

    1. ha ha Thanks, Rian! I have to admit I’m so surprised that people aren’t put off by that much mug, but behold the power of the ‘stache! πŸ™‚

  21. Dang it. Is it too late for me to come. And by that I mean abandon my son who will only just have gotten home from camp for 3 days? Le sigh. I’ve blown it this time, haven’t I? If only because your going and We could have screamed and carried on and then written about it.

  22. For me it’s #1 by far. Very cool. I love vista print! Are you going to have anything on the other side?

    1. Thanks so much, Erin! I think you might have been the person to point me in the Vistaprint direction – am I remembering that correctly?! So THANK YOU! It’s totally awesome.

And I AM going to have something on the other side… tee hee. And funny you should ask; I was toying with a few options today, but I think it’s decided. Planning to reveal in Friday’s post πŸ˜‰

    1. Thank you so much! It’s too bad you’re so far away – it would be awesome to meet you (although an excuse to head to your neck of the woods seems pretty appealing)!

  23. Hello there Jules! Wow so cool you’re going to this conference. Are Zest and Zeal going as well? πŸ™‚ You know, your VVIP, you need an entourage definitely! Plus you can take a pic of you and your chimpmunk buddies and share it with us here. he he. I voted for # 2 by the way, reason being, the rainbow streaks somewhat captured me and complimented your already awesome pic. Plus the background goes along well with everything. The whole presentation looks sassy.

P.S. voted earlier but couldn’t leave my ramblings as AJ is teething and have been unwell since earlier. 😦 and nothing’s coming up on my reader on my phone!! gahh.

    1. Hiya AJ’s Momma! I hope AJ’s feeling better (well, especially now, since it’s really late where you are! LOL)!

(Psst – #2 was my original favorite, too! I am SO outnumbered, ha ha!)

What a good point – Zest and Zeal would LOVE to go…IF I had the guts to take them. I’m just not sure they can keep their drinking under control for an entire day.

      1. He’s sleeping soundly (well kinda, he has a cold and I could hear him trying to breath through his mouth… :-(bless his little heart)
I do like #1 too, in fact, I was torn whether to choose 1 or 2… ha ha. Your pic is just oozing with charm ;-).
Awww,, too bad for Z & Z, perhaps next time! Have fun Jules and take lots and lots of pics!

  24. Cyber-stalkers is one thang. . . . meeting real-life, living-breathing, flesh-eating stalkers at a conference is a hole nutha thang. . . . If you insist on going, take the chippies for protection!!

    1. LOL! You’re so right. I was just telling AJ’s Mom that I’m not sure they can keep their drinking under control for the whole day, but maybe that’s a chance I should take…

  25. Card #1 is my favorite. I think bigger is better in this (and oh so many cases!).
Also, I’m jealous of the Blogference. Maybe you can arrange one in Nova Scotia? πŸ™‚

    1. Hiya Sandy! #1 is KILLIN’ it! Thank you so much for weighing in – this really is making the decision easier.

I can’t even tell you how much I would love to visit you and Nova Scotia, with or without the excuse of a conference!

  26. All of the cards are awesome, but I also voted for #1 (even before reading all of the #1 Fan Club comments!) I think it’s because I love that photo so much. That, and it’s to the point– no loopy fonts or trying-too-hard-to-be-snazzy layouts. Good luck at the conference! πŸ™‚

    1. Of course, B. What are BFFs for? (Martha Stewart and Katie Couric are actually keynote speakers for this one!)

Thanks so much for the feedback! Putting this to the vote has been most illuminating, LOL Peppermeister agrees with you! I think that would be my favorite if VistaPrint would let me change the colors.

  27. I voted yesterday, but didn’t have a chance to leave some feedback. I was INCREDIBLY torn between both #1 and #2. They were both so… YOU! =) In the end, I voted for #2 because the bursts of color just stood out to me more. #1 was cake, #2 was cake with extra frosting and sprinkles. And I always go with sprinkles. πŸ˜‰ Have a great time at the conference and be sure to let us know how it went. I’ve always been interested in those things.

    1. Well gee, how dare you not comment RIGHT AWAY! πŸ˜‰

Thank you so much – #2 was my original fav! But someone told me they ordered black cards on VistaPrint and the black didn’t look good at all in person, so that gave me some much-needed closure.

I can’t wait, and I can’t wait to report back…3 more weeks to go!
