Do you have those people in your life who can get your Giggle Meter skyrocketing with just one look? I sure hope so. Girl on the Contrary’s hilarious post about a recent elevator trip had me reminiscing about all those times I’ve laughed inappropriately. Like this:
For me, I think it all started with one of my very first best friends, a sporty, feisty girl I met in nursery school at the local YMCA. Everything was funny to her – even getting in trouble. We used to play a made-up game where we’d blindfold each other and then feed the blindfolded person something and make them guess what it was. She will never let me live down the time I gave her a spoonful of bacon grease from the coffee can my dad used to pour it into. I could barely hold the spoon still; suppressed laughter had me shaking from head to toe.
Luckily, since then, my nursery school pal and I have had many more giggle-fests that were mutual. Other fits have been dangerous. Being in your late twenties and losing control in a business meeting, for example, is like taking your livelihood into your own hands. The more inappropriate it is to laugh, the harder it always seems not to, right? Last year, I was running a meeting where the focus was on electronic solutions for our current work. I had a few people in the room and the rest were attending virtually. The I.T. rep must have spiked her coffee that afternoon, because she just started laughing uncontrollably whenever anyone would ask a question. She was already two baby steps away from the place with the padded walls, and lack of sleep had apparently done her in. Every time I tried to rescue her and get things back on track, she’d look at me, red-faced, tears streaming down her face, and get me going, too. I’m not exaggerating when I say this went on for 5 minutes. No, I don’t know why I’m still employed. I guess it could have been worse:
Usually I have at least one episode whenever I’m with Babs. It’s kind of like the guarantee you get when you go to Friendly’s – service with a smile, or the meal’s on them. There are a thousand of these times I can’t remember, but they often start with me teasing Babs while we’re out shopping. I do so with a loving heart, to make sure she never starts wearing mom jeans or those puff-painted sweatshirts (again). Department store dressing rooms are like an altar where I give thanks to the giggle gods by trying on hideous things and transforming into the person who would wear them. Retired, chain-smoking Floridian? Snooki’s second cousin (the one no one likes to talk about)? Stripper trying to cover her dark past and pay her way through college? Been there, donned that.
I’d love to hear about some of your ‘episodes’ (the more inappropriate, the better)! Until then, I’ll leave you with a giggly clip of one of my favorite shows:
Oh dear…..it happens the whole time with my daughter and we can’t stop it!! Great posts!
I love to hear that – since it’s the same way with my mom and me (“Babs” in this post)! Thanks so much 🙂
*bookmarked* great links for a quick laugh 😀
Thanks so much! 🙂
Great set of clip, especially the one with the baby. It’s strange that we know exactly why the baby is laughing even though there is nothing inherently funny about the noises the father makes…..
You’re so right! They should show that clip to people on trial for terrible crimes to see if there’s any chance they still have a soul!
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting 🙂
hey,
i was a little girl, i got one mark out of ten again, my teacher came and started shouting at me in front of the class…… and i just could not help but laugh at her face….. it goes on and on till she avoided be….. and i laughed aloud, could not help it, i tried my best to look embarrass but i was not and my attempt was even more painful to her….
oh i can never forget that….. hahaha…..
haha! That’s great. Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
I was in grade 9, in Ecology class. My friend and I were sitting in the front row. My friend started looking through my diary, and on the first page, where there’s an info page to fill out, on the section for allergies, she wrote “bad hair days.” Both of us started laughing, while at the same time trying to supress it as much as possible, seeing as we were in the first row. When the teacher finally kicked us out, we ran out the door and exploded in a giggles fit that lasted about three minutes.
Good times! 🙂
hahaha Isn’t it funny how it’s always the SILLIEST thing that gets the non-stop giggle fest going?? And if potentially getting in trouble is in the picture – forget it!
Thanks SO much for reading and sharing!! 🙂
I work with engineers and am constantly trying to get them to smile more and giggle more. We even encourage “laugh time” every day to just giggle about funny things. I use the baby laughing to demonstrate that emotions are contagious (our mirror neurons kick in and we must smile along with the smiler). Great blog! Very important. We should all start our day with a giggle.
Hi Brent! That is SO great – we need someone like you around here! As for starting your day with a giggle, I could definitely recommend some sites! Have you ever seen AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com or http://www.postcardsfromyomomma.com? Those are two of my non-favorite WordPress sites when I want an instant laugh. On WordPress, I bet you’d love http://thegoodgreatsby.com.
Thanks very much for reading and commenting – I really appreciate it! 🙂
I was just reading the meeting part and I dunno why but I started laughin and until now that I am typing this comment I can’t stop smiling. WTH is wrong with me?! My sister was looking at me like I was some crazy burglar. Good thing I’m wearing earphones so maybe she thought I was just laughing at something I’m watching, or not?
Anyway…
I had this super-duper-awesome time with my friend when we were talking about this guy we saw at the grocery store. Then we started making up stories about what he would do next, or what his life was, and it was a blast.
Don’t ask me. IDK why it was a blast.
Bumped here from Freshly Pressed 🙂
Great happy post!
Hearing that is music to my ears! Thank you! 🙂
I love that you made up stories about the guy at the grocery store – I always wished I was better at doing that! (This is probably many of the reasons why I don’t have a novel written, ha!)
Thanks again and I hope you have a very happy day!
I absolutely love a good laugh. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Yay! Laughing is my favorite. 😉 Thank YOU!
i have had many such laughing moments where you fail to control when you ought to…..
I am VERY glad to hear it! Thanks so much for comin’ by my blog 🙂
@gojulesgo These sometimes really make someone’s day somewhere….
This has really cheered up my day, thanks so much!
Aw, thank YOU! Hearing that makes MY day 🙂
Once, I was in school presenting a project about the death sentence, and right in the middle, I got an uncontrollable fit of laughter. I simply couldn’t stop. The teacher was furious. And I was quite embarrassed.
Oh, I hope you can laugh about it now (does it help that I can? ;))!! Thanks so much for swingin’ by and sharing!!
I thought the anchor falling off the chair was hysterical!
haha! I love that one, too! Believe me when I say I actually had to narrow it down – YouTube is a miracle. Thanks so much for reading my blog!
Enjoyed your post! Here’s a YouTube video clip from a show called Coupling where the character Jeff describes The Giggle Loop. Very funny. You gotta watch it.
Thanks so much, and thanks for sharing the clip (can’t wait to watch it tonight when I get home)! 🙂
That was FANTASTIC! I’d never seen Coupling, but the scene in the bar reminded me a lot of Friends (which I LOVED)! Thanks so much for sending that!
One time I was at a formal dinner and there was a choir there singing. They did a piece where they came down among the tables and stood close to members of the audience. They then sang a religious, quiet song. The guy standing right in front of me was looking at me intensely and as he started to sing his nostrils flared so shockingly that I immediately had a giggle fit that didn’t let up. I could not stop–and by the time the song was over I was shaking and sweating. Then, horror of all horrors, they asked me to come offer the final prayer of the evening. You can imagine how that went.
Yesss, this is a GREAT giggle-fit story! I’m cracking up picturing the nostrils. Thank you SO much for reading and sharing! 🙂
lol, great post! (:
Thank you so much! 🙂
this post really impress me
Thank you!!
Thanks for this! Can’t wait to share with my kids. We are without power now due to storm and looking hard for ways to giggle!
Thanks so much! I’m really sorry to hear about your power – we’re still without power, too (in western NJ)! They said we’d get it back today, but as of 10am they hadn’t started working on the down poles, so we’re not especially optimistic… I’m sending positive, TV/dishwasher/water-working thoughts your way! 🙂
Thanks so much for stopping by, and for the post mention!
Funny stuff, thanks
thanx for the good laugh! keep it up!! 😀

Thank you so much! I promise I will try my hardest to keep it up, as long as you realize by ‘try my hardest’ I mean drunkenly peruse YouTube during America’s Got Talent commercials 😉
On a totally unrelated note, do you know any place that gives away free vodka for Hurricane Irene victims?
I saw this on freshpressed and immediately linked my friends up on facebook. Thank God for those people who can induce fits of uncontrollable insane catatonic laughter in us, eh?
I saw this on fresh pressed the other day and immediately linked it over to my friends.
Thank God for those friends who can induce those insane uncontrollable catatonic laughter in us, eh?
Cheers! 🙂
Thank you so much! That is really sweet of you, and I couldn’t agree more! Yesterday I was having a good giggle re-watching the honey badger video on YouTube for about the 10th time! Some just never get old. Thanks again 🙂
Your post brought a smile to my face. Thanks for passing on the laughter.
Cheers,
Louise
Hi Louise! Thanks so much – that makes me very happy to hear! (Smiles all around!) :o)
nice blog!
Thank you very much! 🙂
Ah I love when things are so funny you can’t stop laughing and often its something thats only ridiculous to you! Thanks!
You’re so right! Thanks very much for reading and commenting 🙂
Well, I know where to go when I need a laugh! This is a great entry, and I could definitely relate! It’s amazing the hilarious laughing fits we can get into with my parents, brother, sister and my husband! Laughing until we’re crying…especially my mom, sister and me, while the guys sometimes look on as if we’re nuts (even though they find it hilarious too ;)…maybe it’s a girl thing? 🙂
Aw, thanks so much, Dounia! You’re right, I think it is a girl thing (add that to the list of reasons why we’re the superior sex ;))!
